Domaine des Echardières “Le Long Bec”, Touraine Chenonceaux Blanc
Tasted: January 29, 2022
Appellation: Touraine, Loire Valley, France
Loire's Touraine is pretty vast, and within, contains many tinier appellations. The more famous ones are Chinon, Bourgeuil, and Vouvray. Then there is Jasnière, lesser known but arguably a cult favourite. Cheverny, a place that brought us the Adventures of Tintin. Cour-Cheverny, home to the elusive Romorantin and a personal favourite...
A few weeks ago, an unexpected encounter with this Touraine Chenonceaux at a liquor store caught me by surprise. A rare sighting, because their wines are so hard to find! This Domaine des Eschardières “Le Long Bec” is a 100% Sauv Blanc – as all Touraine Chenonceaux AOC whites should be – with a rather substantial body, almost oily, probably from the 8 months on lees. Ripe with exotic fruits and honey, explosive minerality, with a finish that lingers on. A mind-bending palate sensation.
Did you know?
Chenonceaux is better known for its Chenonceau Castle, AKA. the "Ladies' Château", as it was home to several notable women, Catherine de' Medici, Diane de Poitier, etc.
There should be a few more of this Domaine des Echardieres "La Long Bec" in some LCBOs. Happy treasure hunting!
